Exploring Kid-Friendly Activities Near Roma Explorers Inn

Families visiting Roma in Queensland often enjoy the views and popular attractions in the immediate area, such as the Big Rig, the Roma Salesyards, or Roma’s largest bottle tree. However, the town offers much more for the little ones, blending history, nature, and hands-on learning. From prime camping spots to local swimming pools, this article will explore all the kid-friendly activities and spots near Roma Explorers Inn.

Local Attractions and Activities for Kids

Have Fun at Messy Play

Parents looking for a weekend morning activity for their kids can explore the Big Rig’s Messy Play or Sensory Play. This engaging activity allows the kids to get into messy sessions and explore their creativity, curiosity, and problem-solving skills. Designed to engage all five of their senses, these sessions help boost the kids’ language and motor skills in a fun and engaging environment.

Parents planning to attend should bring a change of clothes, a hat, and a bottle of water, and dress the children appropriately for the weather.

Roma Express Miniature Train Ride

A visit to the Big Rig isn’t complete without hopping aboard the Roma Express with the kids. This miniature train travels through a 1.4 km circuit starting at the Big Rig Parkland and through the beautiful area adjacent to Bungil Creek. The ride will also cross Bailey Bridge, a pre-fabricated truss bridge considered one of the greatest feats of engineering in WWII.

The train operates every Sunday from 10 am – 12 pm from March to October, so plan your visit accordingly.

The Oil Patch Challenge at the Oil Patch Museum

The Big Rig Oil Patch is an excellent place to learn about Roma’s history with natural gas through either a guided or self-guided tour of the outdoor interactive museum. To get the teens and older kids involved, challenge them to the Oil Patch challenge, a scavenger hunt where they’ll use the ancient field equipment of clipboards and pencils.  Completing the challenge offers a chance to earn a share in the Mooga Oil Company.

Read Books at Local Libraries

Little bookworms can spend an afternoon perusing the extensive collection of books at the Roma Library. The library also offers E-Resources available to all members and can be accessed through their public computers. They also offer free Wi-Fi.

Splashing Fun at Local Swimming Pools

During Roma’s warmer months, nothing beats cooling off in the water, so head to local swimming spots like the Denise Spencer Memorial Pool with the kids for a refreshing dip. This public pool is 50 metres long and has eight lanes, providing ample space for everyone. It’s also completely covered, offering respite from the harsh sun.
